Girl released, but remains a suspect

6/09/2008 10:36:00 AM
The suspect in the killing of Kingston chef Cameron Anderson is a 17-year-old girl.

Mr Anderson was killed late on Sunday night or early Monday morning and his body found outside Kingston's ABC child care centre by staff arriving for work on Monday morning.

Police believe the 19-year-old was stabbed several times in an attack at nearby Telopea Park and staggered across the street to the grounds of the child care centre, where he died from a stab wound to the chest.

Detectives have focused their inquiries on a ''person of interest'' who was seen drinking with Mr Anderson at the nearby Filthy McFadden's pub in the final hours of his life.

As Mr Anderson's family prepare to farewell their son at a funeral service on Monday, police have revealed that the person of interest is a 17-year-old girl and have still not ruled out charges against her.

AFP Forensic Services officers have completed their examination of the scene and a police spokeswoman said numerous pieces of evidence, including a knife, had been collected and were still being tested.

The girl was released from custody after helping police with their inquiries and detectives said she had ''provided a version of events'' on the night of the killing.

Detective Sergeant Jason Kennedy, from Territory Investigations Group, said the investigation into Mr Anderson's death was ''complex'' but progressing.

''With this case there is a large amount of forensic evidence to be processed and analysed and this will take time,'' Sergeant Kennedy said.

''However, we are making progress and we will continue to conduct a full and thorough investigation and leave no stone unturned.''

Police are appealing for any witnesses who may have seen or heard anything suspicious in the Telopea Park area in the early hours of Monday morning to contact Crime Stoppers.
