Green waste the issue: survey

05 Dec, 2009 10:57 AM
Just more than half of Canberra households would support government action to crack down on plastic bags in the ACT but more households think managing green waste is a bigger problem in the national capital, according to a new survey.

Those who supported a levy on plastic bags overwhelmingly would prefer the money collected to go to an environmental organisation (87 per cent) rather than into the Government's coffers (33 per cent).

The results came as Environment, Climate Change and Water Minister Simon Corbell confirmed yesterday the Government would proceed with a trial on a plastic bag levy in the ACT within six months.

The telephone survey of 560 ACT households in July found 58 per cent supported some sort of restrictive government action such as a levy or ban on plastic bags.

Of those, 40 per cent were for a compulsory plastic bag levy while 33 per cent were for a ban on the use of all plastic bags.

The survey asked people if they would pay five, 10, 20 or 50c per plastic bag. The most popular rate was 20c per bag, with 48 per cent supporting that amount.

Those who were most likely to be in favour of government action on plastic bags were women, people aged 35-54, households with an income of more than $150,000, group households and households in north Canberra and Tuggeranong.
