Greens candidate defends 4WD use

12 Aug, 2010 09:23 AM
Senate candidate Lin Hatfield Dodds says she's not environmentally irresponsible for owning a V8 Toyota Landcruiser.

But her choice of vehicle is in stark contrast to the environmentally friendly models favoured by her Greens colleagues at the Legislative Assembly.

Of Canberra's four MLAs, three drive a Toyota Prius and the fourth has a Smart Car.

Labor senator Kate Lundy's lease plan vehicle is a six- cylinder Ford FG. The other family car is a 2007 Ford Territory.

Liberal senator Gary Humphries and his wife drive a Toyota Corolla and a Toyota Aurion.

Ms Hatfield Dodds told The Canberra Times that poor public transport options forced her family to buy a second car about two years ago. The other family car was a Toyota Echo. The 4WD was chosen to take the family on monthly camping trips.

''I'm not at all worried about driving a four-wheel drive I've always said I don't fit the mould of what people often perceive a green to be,'' she said.

Both cars' carbon emissions were offset through Greening Australia's Breathe Easy program. According to Greening Australia, a large diesel V8 4WD produces 5.460 tonnes of emissions each year. The recommended offset donation is $191.10.

''I drive two cars. I have a Landcruiser and an Echo. Mostly I drive the Echo because I try not to drive the big car around Canberra. That's our car to go camping in and I ride an e-cycle, which is a bicycle with a little battery on it, and I walk,'' Ms Hatfield Dodds said.

A Green candidate with a V8 Lancruiser? This is so wrong on so many levels. She has just made herself a joke. Well a bigger joke.

Of course the decision to purchase a large 4wd is a personal one. However, the Greens have long criticised those who do so on environmental grounds. Furthermore, they have urged Australians to make difficult decisions for the sake of the environment. How can a Green parliamentarian ask the electorate to change their behaviour when she takes the easy option?

Easy being Green Lin when the only inconvenience is self righteous tokenism eg taking a green bag to the super market! However when "real inconvenience" is involved, like camping without your V8 4 WD diesel, well just pay Greening Australia's Breath Easy program $191.10 concience fine - Green's, weasel word champions!

Awwww come on guys.... give her a break.... at least she gets the bloody thing dirty (with real dirt) and not like the majority of other SUV/4WD behemoths running around Canberra that have never left the bitumen let alone been parked on grass...

Big deal. Being a Greens candidate doesn't mean her family loses the right to personal choices.

I suggest that's part of the problem, phantom.

Oh my word! I bet she has heating in her house too! Labor and Liberal can drive all the small cars they want but until they start driving real reform in our energy sector and get serious about reducing greenhouse gas emissions I'm afraid I still have to vote Green.

Yeah, sounds like she is really committed to the cause....don't look at what I do, listen to what I say.
