Greens' Hunter to have 'leadership role'

27 Oct, 2008 02:43 PM
The ACT Greens have elected a leader - but don't call her that.

Meredith Hunter says she is the "parliamentary convenor" of the Greens, which won an unprecedented four seats in last weekend's ACT election, giving the party the balance of power.

Ms Hunter conceded she would have "a leadership role", but said the Greens would act as a team and that she should be called the convenor, not the leader.

"We're the Greens and we do politics differently," Ms Hunter said as she announced her new position.

"We're not the old parties, we don't do things the old way."

When told by journalists that she would be called the leader, Ms Hunter replied: "I can't control that, can I?"

Ms Hunter and her Green teammates will hold discussions with Labor and the Liberals tomorrow about forming government.

A decision is expected by the end of this week.

Labor holds seven seats and the Liberals six in the ACT's 17-member assembly.

The Greens in the ACT keep going from strength to strength. This is great news. Now we can get on with getting the ACT Greener and cleaner.

Whether she's called the leader or not, Meredith will lead the Greens, and no doubt the government, of the ACT; and she is likely to do a damned fine job if it.

I am very impressed with Meredith and I am certain she will perform well as the parliamentary convenor for the ACT Greens. Canberra's future is green!

I'm not a fan of any politician, but to me 7 Labor and 6 Liberal members tells me a lot about the voters of Canberra. Canberra is big enough to decide for themselves what they need and that's certainly not a bunch of people that wants to have a strangle hold in the good people of Canberra.

I think that the euphoria will be short-lived. Once the Greens impose their loopy policies on whomever cuts them a deal, there will be some regrets. In particular, if you think water restrictions are bad now, because of a lack of planning by successive governments, wait till the ovals turn to dustbowls and your children can't participate in sport on the weekends because these environmentally friendly dopes insist on even more draconian measures. On the other hand, maybe they can take up basket-weaving and 'dance'.

The first thing that any (great) leader must do is to claim his/her leadership. With leadership comes responsibility, blame and credit - a convener is just a person who organizes meetings arranges flowers and answers the phone. I voted Green because Labour/Liberal have deserted the environment unfortunately, so far, the four Green selectees haven't instilled any confidence that the ACT will benefit from their presence in our local government. Either lead or follow or get out of the way an let the others do what we elected them to do.

Makes no difference who the greens elect as a leader it is still going to cost the ratepayers of the ACT a lot of money if they happen to get some of their weird ideas through. Give us six months and we may even get visits from little green men from outer space

Leadership implies responsibility and we can't have that can we ... a responsible Green, don't make me laugh.

This will be the making or the breaking of the greens - actual government, actually having a coalition partner to consider. I just don't see it working myself, I think that they would be mad to take a cabinet position. They would be better in opposition (agreeing where they agree, but opposing where they don't)
