Greens in drive for transit lane to Qbn

28/08/2008 1:00:00 AM
A transit lane for buses and cars carrying at least two people should be built between Canberra and Queanbeyan to help ease the bumper-to-bumper traffic in peak hour, Greens candidates for both jurisdictions say.

ACT Greens candidate for Ginninderra Meredith Hunter and Greens lead candidate for the Queanbeyan City Council election Katrina Willis have called for more cross-border cooperation on public transport services, including the possibility of light rail between the two cities.

Ms Willis said about 65 per cent of Queanbeyan workers commuted to Canberra while 40 per cent of ACT workers commuted to Queanbeyan.

''Yet each city's public transport services operate as if the other city doesn't exist,'' she said.

They believe a transit lane on major routes such as Canberra Avenue should be built and paid for by both the ACT Government and Queanbeyan City Council.

Buses and cars carrying at least two people would be allowed in the lane. ''It will encourage people to carpool and make the bus service a much more attractive proposition,'' Ms Willis said.

Deane's Buslines projects officer James Singer said the company supported cross-border transit lanes, saying it had lobbied Queanbeyan Mayor Frank Pangallo, Monaro MP Steve Whan and Eden-Monaro MP Mike Kelly for the lanes, without success.

''Our buses are sitting in traffic and if they're trying to encourage people on to public transport, the public transport has to move quicker than the cars,'' Mr Singer said. ''Therefore a transit lane anywhere is definitely going to improve patronage of the buses and reduce cars on the road.''

The NSW local government elections are on September 13, the ACT election on October 18.

''We live in a region and there are a lot of these issues we can tackle as a region. This issue of transport is one, there are many others, such as water,'' Ms Hunter said. ''A transit lane is a very immediate solution. We can be working together for long-term solutions, like light rail.''

Mr Pangallo, who is standing as an Independent in the ACT seat of Molonglo, said funding of a transit lane would be more a matter for the ACT Government but he supported anything that eased traffic congestion between the two communities.

Ms Hunter, meanwhile, said the retirement of Ginninderra MLAs Bill Stefaniak (Liberal) and Wayne Berry (Labor) ''really does open up the field'' in the seat. Ginninderra gave the Stanhope Government its majority ''and this is the electorate that can turn that around.''
