Greens' Shane Rattenbury elected ACT speaker

05 Nov, 2008 11:54 AM
Greens MLA Shane Rattenbury has been elected speaker of the ACT Legislative Assembly.

Mr Rattenbury is one of four Greens holding the balance of power in the 17-seat assembly following a general election on October 18.

The minority Labor government did not nominate one of its seven MLAs for the speaker's position, opting to support Mr Rattenbury in a contest against the Liberals' Vicki Dunne.

Labor's Mary Porter was elected deputy speaker.

Labor leader Jon Stanhope was elected formally as the territory's chief minister.

Well Canberrans, another four years of the 'joke' (Stanhope). The Greens have already capitulated on the reopening of schools and the data centre at Tuggeranong. I would imagine that whatever the 'joke' wants the Greens will provide. Sadly, as a Canberra resident for 18 years I have seen it deteriorate especially during the last eight years. My wife and I are about to depart the once wonderful city of Canberra to head north. At least we will not have to put up with the garbage Labor will dish out over the next four years (with the blessing of the Greens).

I am devastated. I deliberately didn't vote for Labor because I wanted to get rid of Stanhope and his ego so desperately. Were the Greens' so blinded that they couldn't see it was time for a generational change even if it meant a change of party? Did they not notice the slogans that were stolen by Labor from the Community Alliance party? Obviously the Greens don't live in the affected areas of Canberra still reeling from Stanhope decisions without consultation.

This is great. Finally sanity has prevailed. The party with the highest primary vote, and most seats, has been returned, however with specific checks and balances in place to ensure open and accountable governance, and the Speaker position has gone to a non-government (not anti-governemnt) person. This truly is democracy at its best, regardless of your views. There is no way that Seselja could have expected anything else ... lower votes, less seats, and a swing against his party too even when fighting a government that was on the nose.

But if Mike wants to buy a lovely farm at Kandanga with views to the Glasshouse Mts he will find that the equally arrogant Qld Labor Government will flood it when they dam the Mary River

To the twisted souls Mac, Mike and long memory.. It must be difficult to grasp that you are in the minority and therefore your views (unfortunately for you) are not shared by the majority. Democracy is a wonderful thing. Unfortunately you seem unable to grasp this and I find your bitterness sad. (and as is pointed out Mike, no matter how North you head at the current time you will be under labor government. So stiffen up that quivering bottom lip and wipe those tears away; the people have spoken!)

Andrew you must have missed the results of the election - did you not notice the TEN PER CENT plus swing against Labor? Compared with 3% against Libs? I think what the voters indicated most is that they want CHANGE (some morons voted for Greens thinking this would instigate change - and what do we have? They have bowed to pressure on the power station already, and school closures). Yeah GREAT accountability happening there!! No ministries, a speaker position, and giving Labor exactly what they want. Hmmm just what we all voted for. I'm with the others; it's time to move. Seriously, these outcomes are a sad joke for this city in so many ways. Just wait and see.

To Andrew S and Tim from Watson. I do not have a problem with Labor but with the Greens way of doing things (in this instance) and especially with Stanhope. I think that you will find that if a wide straw poll was taken then Stanhope would not be as popular as he seems to believe that he is.

This is fantastic news for the Greens and the people of the ACT. The Greens just go from strength to strength. This is better than Obama winning by a mile.

Hey, the Labor party suffered a swing aganst them, so did the Libs.... Labor got the biggest numbers of seats (sorry Libs!). Liberal supporters' our grapes are pointless.
