Greens' Shane Rattenbury elected ACT speaker

05 Nov, 2008 11:54 AM
Greens MLA Shane Rattenbury has been elected speaker of the ACT Legislative Assembly.

Mr Rattenbury is one of four Greens holding the balance of power in the 17-seat assembly following a general election on October 18.

The minority Labor government did not nominate one of its seven MLAs for the speaker's position, opting to support Mr Rattenbury in a contest against the Liberals' Vicki Dunne.

Labor's Mary Porter was elected deputy speaker.

Labor leader Jon Stanhope was elected formally as the territory's chief minister.

Amen to GT's comment! Finally someone speaks sense. As Zed pointed out yesterday, there are around 60% of voters who DIDN'T want Stanhope to lead. I was definitely in that smart majority. how were we ignored?

If the system was "one man one vote" then Zed was the only one to have a clear mandate to govern. Stanhope seems to forget he suffered a personl swing against him of nearly 50% since the 2004 election......and he still gets to be the Mayor. What a joke!

I think that stating that the powerhouse (data centre) will not be changed is misquoting, Jon Stanhope said - everyone was screaming for an EIS, we are having an EIS. I don't read that meaning that the plan will proceed.

What a joke. Rattenbury has been in the Assembly for less than an hour and he is now the Speaker. What a disappointment.

The Hare-Clark voting system is simply not suitable for Canberra. With nearly all the smaller parties outside of the Greens, added to the liberals vote, we have a situation where the conservative vote was more than the labor /green vote, yet the Hare Clark system dishes up a minority labor government. Already the Greens are showing absolutely no spine as Stanhope firmly says the existing Powerhouse (Data) Centre will not be changed. I call them wishy washies who will just be there to make up the vote. Stanhope will just play up to them to suit himself, and in any important issues, ignore them. Canberra needs a voting system which gives any Government a clear mandate to govern.

The Greens are making decisions slowly and carefully. Thet were wise not taking a ministry and I congratulate Shane on being elected speaker. The Greens team will make decisions with with integrity and wisdom and this can only improve how ACT is governed.

It's always good to be elected to government yet the Green choose to stay out of power. The speaker position effectively sidelines a Green MLA. But it seems they never ran to gain power in the first place, they don't want to take the responsibility of government. It's nice to know my home will be devalued being situated next door to a power plant! Perhaps I'll run for the next election myself, the only exception being I'll be running to govern not sit back and support an arrogant Chief Minister. The GREENS are a joke.

Hey, the Labor party suffered a swing aganst them, so did the Libs.... Labor got the biggest numbers of seats (sorry Libs!). Liberal supporters' our grapes are pointless.

This is fantastic news for the Greens and the people of the ACT. The Greens just go from strength to strength. This is better than Obama winning by a mile.

To Andrew S and Tim from Watson. I do not have a problem with Labor but with the Greens way of doing things (in this instance) and especially with Stanhope. I think that you will find that if a wide straw poll was taken then Stanhope would not be as popular as he seems to believe that he is.
