Greens to name Reps candidates

13 Nov, 2009 08:30 AM
The ACT Greens are expected to confirm on Monday their lower house candidates for the coming federal election.

After a ballot of members, the party meeting is expected to name Sue Ellerman for the seat of Canberra and confirm Indra Esguerra for Fraser.

But the eagerly anticipated Senate preselection nominations are still some weeks away.

Federal Greens leader Bob Brown said the ACT was a ''rapidly greening territory'' and welcomed the two women as very capable candidates.

''It will be tough for the Greens to win these seats, but when we finalise Senate selections we will be a formidable team of three and we will try and get those seats,'' he said.

''The ACT returns our highest percentage vote in the Australia, bigger even than Tasmania. And unlike the old parties, three of our five senators are women, and the majority of our Senate candidates will be women through our selection process.''

Ms Ellerman who works with people who have debilitating neurological conditions has contested three Legislative Assembly elections for the Greens and run for the House of Representatives twice. She was bullish about her chances at the next poll. ''We will have a strong team coming into the next election and I think it's important the community knows that the Greens are a viable option in Canberra ... The Greens vote has increased very significantly at each election and I have no doubt that will continue to be the case. Plus Indra and I complement each other very well.''

Ms Esguerra, who is Greens MLA Caroline Le Couteur's senior adviser, is running for the first time.

''We are working towards a campaign that will happen somewhere between March and October next year. I think the Greens are better able to stand up for the people of Canberra then the currently elected members. Climate change will be a big issue at the next election, what happens at Copenhagen will be a big issue and will help shape things.

''Then there is the civil unions legislation, more say for Canberrans on planning issues in the Parliament ...'' she said.

The Greens' ACT branch is one of the last to name its Senate candidate.

The party announced on Monday that former Democrats senator Andrew Bartlett would contest the lower house seat of Brisbane at the next election. Sitting senators Christine Milne, of Tasmania, and Rachel Siewert, of Western Australia, have confirmed they will run again, while Richard Di Natale will run in Victoria, sitting MLA Lee Rhiannon will run in NSW, and Larissa Waters in Queensland.

A party spokesman said Senate preselection had been delayed until after lower house preselections were completed. He said Ms Ellerman and Ms Esguerra's approval was expected to be a formality.
