Greens to push new Bill for gay marriage

24 Aug, 2009 08:42 AM
The Greens will table a same-sex marriage Bill at the Legislative Assembly this week.

Greens Attorney-General spokesman Shane Rattenbury said the Bill would establish the right for same-sex couples to have a legally recognised ceremony under the ACTs civil union legislation.

''This legislation is an important step in ensuring equality and respect for same sex couples in the ACT,'' Mr Rattenbury said.

''This legislation will mean that same sex couples, if they wish, can stand before family and friends and make their declaration of love for one another, just as any other couple can.''

But under Section 35(2) of the Australian Capital Territory (Self-Government) Act 1988 the Governor-General has the power to disallow any enactment made by the Legislative Assembly within six months of its passing.

This power has been used once to repeal the Civil Unions Act (2006) that allowed same-sex marriage.

At the Labor national conference there was a debate about same sex-marriage and Prime Minister Kevin Rudd reiterated his opposition to it.

Mr Rattenbury said Mr Rudd's views would not stop the Greens. ''Whilst the threat of Federal veto hangs over this legislation, we must not allow that to get in the way of doing what is right for the people of the ACT ... it's about respect, it's about equality for all couples. I know there have been battles about this before but times have changed and we need to press on. It's the right thing to do.''

There are far more important issues in the ACT to fix up than tinkering with the institution of marriage. For God sake LEAVE IT ALONE! The ACT Government should be concentrating on fixing the justice system, the health system, our roads, police resources, etc. etc., rather than pandering to the wants of some minority group. There really is no need for gay marriage in the ACT! The Greenies should at least be concentrating on dealing with "green" issues like to do with the environment. What do gay rights have to do with the environment??? Frankly I am sick of the loony left and what it is doing to our once great city.

Good on the Greens at least someone in politics has to have the courage of their convictions on ideology. Its long overdue.

Marriage is a sacred institution for man and woman only. Greens, stop focusing on your internal issues and serve the Nation, that's what you're paid to do.

One could also get sick of the loony religious right and their persisitent 'born to rule and know better' mentality. The ACT has been the most progressive state on social issues, and anyone who knows anything about the Greens knows they are a political party that is offering a complete solution to all issues involving government and the people. They are not just concerned about trees and the environment. There is absolutely no reason other than silly religious 'beliefs' (not truths) that some wish to inflict on everyone else, why gays and lesbians can't marry if that is what they want. At least their wish stems from love and not hate. In any case it is now a secular process and not an 'institution' owned by anyone. Democracy is about governing for all voters, even so called 'minority groups'. I think many that resist such a change still have problems accepting that homosexuality is completely normal and not an illness. They would rather believe anachronistic stories about Sodom and Gomorrah than face scientific fact.

ACT Resident and Raider Lover- If you don't want to marry someone from the same sex than don't. But those who do should be able to execute a choice on whether they get married or not. I am a hetrosexual being who believes that marriage is about two people making a commitment to each other not about a man and a woman entering into a sacred insitution- what a joke!

I agree with Rob 100%, well said. Everyone has a right to equality and happiness. Am I gay or lesbian, no but I do believe in people being happy and if someone of the same sex makes them happy so be it, they should have the right to vocalise and legalise their love for one another just as others do. Everyone has right to an opinion and their own beliefs, stop trying to recruit and convert people and justify why you and your 'God' are so right, as Rob said, it is a belief and not everyone believes. So if you don't want to marry someone of the same sex...DON'T but do not deny that of people who do.

Rob, no need to get angry. You talk about love and at the same time won't tolerate views that don't line up with yours. My views differ from yours but I respect yours and am willing to fight for them because that's what democracy stands for.

Get off your high horse ACT resident. Maybe we are all sick of you psychotic right wing “minority Christian groups”… gay people deserve the same rights as straight people. It’s about human rights and serving the needs for the entire population, not just for the straight, threatened community. We do not want to take away the sanctity of marriage; we are just asking to be recognized as completely and utterly equal citizens. Good on the greens for pushing a real issue. Good on them for actually seeking to act on something that can make a difference. Homosexuality is completely normal and if people think that it isn’t, then aren’t we just heading back to the dark ages? Progression is needed and this is what the Greens are offering.

The term "God" was not even mentioned in the article nor "Raider Lover"s response. Why does our daily left wing blogger Rob attack God on an issue like this. I am an athiest and believe marriage should be between a man and a woman only!
