Harvest brings wine of the century

THIS year's wine harvest is so impressive it will be bottled for the territory's centenary celebrations, the ACT Government has announced.

ACT Chief Minister Jon Stanhope said two varieties a riesling and a shiraz would be created using some of this year's best fruit and the top skills of the local wine industry.

"The wine will be released in our centenary year, 2013. I understand the association is looking to make this process as inclusive as possible so that a number of winemakers in the district will have the opportunity to be part of the unique project," Mr Stanhope said.

With the Canberra district "cementing" its position as one of Australia's premier wine producing regions, he said it was "fitting" that it produced something of significance for Canberra's 100th birthday.

Production of the commemorative wine was a suggestion in the Centenary of Canberra Blueprint. The centenary project team then approached the Canberra District Wine Industry Association with the idea.

The wines produced will be used during centenary celebrations at official functions and a limited supply will also be made available for public sale.

Allan Pankhurst of Pankhurst Wines near Hall said the idea had the local industry buzzing with excitement.

The strength of this year's bumper crop is also setting up this year's Wine Harvest Festival to be one of the best, with most growers exhausted but elated by the quality and quantity of grapes picked.

The festival, which runs from April 5-6, will showcase 24 vineyards from around the region with wine tastings, lunches, bands and helicopter rides.
