A large horde of commercial explosives found at a deceased man's residence in Hughes yesterday left residents locked out of 50 households.
A search of a house in Jess Place at 11.30am led to the discovery of explosives in a shed at the rear of the property.
Superintendent Matt Varley said more explosives and military ordinances like artillery shells and grenades had been found in the house and in the shed.
According to the Australian Federal Police bomb response team, the explosives posed little or no danger if they were undisturbed and remained intact.
A voluntary evacuation began at about 3pm, with residents of Jess Place, Hyde Place, Smyth Place and Glasgow Place being asked to leave.
Police said most residents were cooperative and left when told of the situation. After 3pm, no one was allowed into the area.
Superintendent Varley said the discovery was not being treated as criminal or suspicious.
He said the owner of the home was deceased and police were called by the estate's executor.
About 30 police responded to the situation, with 15 units, including the ACT Policing bomb response team and special response and security team. They were supported by three fire pumpers and three State Emergency Services teams.
ACT Policing said residents may be allowed back into their homes early this morning but would be asked to evacuate again today.
Residents wanting updates on the situation should call 131-444.
