Hundreds evacuated in Fyshwick fire

20 Nov, 2009 06:10 PM
Firefighters will work into the night to extinguish a fire that started in an industrial rubbish yard and forced much of Fyshwick to be evacuated.

Roads were closed for about three hours and businesses in the Gladstone Street area were evacuated as the ACT Fire Brigade and Rural Fire Service brought the blaze under control.

Plumes of black smoke filled the air and numerous explosions were heard during the hot and blustery conditions.

Emergency Services fought the blaze as Canberra recorded its equal highest November temperature of 38.9 degrees.

A 200-metre exclusion zone near the fire will remain for another 24 hours.

the roads were closed and traffic was banked up everywhere as Fyshwick was closed down completely. it was well organised and although it rescheduled my work in the afternoon, and it was hot in the queue in the car, I felt for the Police Officers out in the heat dealing with directing traffic - particularly the lone Police woman at the DFO traffic lights - surely in times like these it would have been better to have done that job in a pair? Overall, well organised in the face of a potential disaster!

What is it with these roads? If there is an evacuation, they get CLOGGED like all hell! Weren't there any lessons learned from the 2003 firestorm, when all the roads in that area were turned into carparks??
