Huxley wants Brumbies comeback against all odds

11 Oct, 2008 10:08 AM
Former Wallaby Julian Huxley will seek out Australia's top neurologists in Sydney next month in a bid to return to professional rugby union as early as next season.

The 29-year-old ACT Brumbies player was told he would never play contact sport again after surgeons removed a brain tumour in March.

But he has since discovered that several athletes, including an American football player, have made successful returns to top-level sport after similar operations.

While his specialist has advised him against a return to rugby, citing a lack of data on the risks of playing contact sport after brain surgery, Huxley said he still hadn't given up hope of representing the Brumbies again.

''There's a seminar next month and I'll be cornering a few specialists to talk about the safety issues of playing again,'' Huxley said. ''If it was safe to go back and play, that desire is certainly there.''

''It's a great challenge to have a brain tumour and then get back to where you were.

''At the moment I'm just trying to stay relatively fit, so if I get the green light I'm not too far off getting ready to play.''

Huxley remains contracted to the Brumbies for the next two years and the club has appointed him as its kicking skills coach for next season.

He has already resumed light training and taken part in a 300km bike ride from Canberra to Orange to raise money for Cancer Care Western NSW.

He said he was likely to return to full contact training as early as January if he was advised it was safe to continue his career.

''I'm pretty much able to do everything apart from the contact.

''Hopefully I can corner a few [specialists] and get some guidance from them at this seminar.

''Once that happens, I probably think I'll be ready for contact early next year. I'll let my skull heal up for a bit longer first.''

Huxley discovered he had a brain tumour after he was knocked out during a Super 14 match in early March. It was a massive blow for the fullback, who had debuted for the Wallabies the previous season and played a part in Australia's World Cup campaign.

He said the opportunity to remain at the Brumbies in a coaching role had helped ease the pain of knowing he might never play again. But running out on the field with the Brumbies was still at the forefront of his mind.

''I'm getting into the coaching and enjoying that side of things, but I haven't given up on strapping on the boots in anger again some time soon.

''But you've got to make the decision very quickly if you're going to have a go, otherwise you're cheapening training a little bit just by going out there and having a bit of a run around for your own reasons.''
