 Israeli court frees ACT woman

Israeli court frees ACT woman

09 Feb, 2010 07:53 AM
A Canberra woman facing the prospect of six months in an Israeli jail has won her first legal round, with the Supreme Court in Tel Aviv ordering her release.

Twenty-two-year-old Bridget Chappell, a pro-Palestinian activist, was arrested in the West Bank early on Sunday morning (midday Canberra time) after a dozen heavily armed Israeli soldiers forced their way into her apartment.

She and a Spanish colleague, Ariadna Jove Martin, were apprehended on what their activist friends are describing as trumped up visa charges.

Both women are volunteers with the International Solidarity Movement, a Palestinian-led organisation committed to non-violent but direct-action resistance to Israeli occupation.

Late last night Canberra time the court ordered they be released upon payment of 3000 shekels ($A930) each. They were ordered to stay out of occupied territories.
