'It's going straight to the pool room'

Bindi Irwin has picked up a Logie for best popular new female talent, dedicating the award to her mother, Terri, and father, the late Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin.

At just nine years old, Bindi edged out competitors including Home and Away's Charlotte Best and Neighbours' Adelaide Kane for her ABC program, Bindi: The Jungle Girl.

She declared last night that her Silver Logie was going "straight to the pool room".

Bindi was left almost in tears at the 50th Annual TV Week Logie awards in Melbourne. "It is so exciting, I never thought in my wildest dreams I would win," she said.

Bindi said she had no idea where she would keep the award.

"I haven't even decided that yet, but straight to the pool room as The Castle would say," she said.

"I will probably go back to the [hotel] room and order room service. And then have cheesecake."

Bindi had swapped her usual khaki for a little more glitz and glamour, saying on the red carpet that the night was exciting.

Terri Irwin said that Bindi had spent the morning climbing a lychee tree with her younger brother, Robert.

There has been criticism that Bindi has not been allowed to have a normal childhood, being raised in the entertainment world, but Mrs Irwin said attending the Logies was an unusual event and the kids played and laughed like any others.

After Bindi won, Mrs Irwin could not hide her pride. "What a night for a nine-year-old girl, I couldn't be more proud," she said.

"She's not an actress, it's all about wildlife conservation and that's what makes me especially proud of her.

"It really encourages other kids to think about the world around them and make their dreams come true."

Bindi has taken on the role of promoting conservation after the death of her father, the internationally renowned Steve Irwin, who was killed by a stingray in 2006.

The Gold Logie went to Kate Ritchie for the second year in a row, the now departed Home and Away star edging out tough competition from seven other nominees.

Ritchie struck early with the Silver Logie for Most Popular Actress, while her main rivals Chris Lilley and Rove McManus won silver awards.

Gina Riley was excited about the Logie for Kath and Kim in the light entertainment category, and spruiked the show's transformation to United States television.

Riley said her alter-ego would be desperately trying to pash most popular new male talent winner Lincoln Lewis, of Home and Away.

Lewis said the "massivest thing" was being nominated, so winning was "massive". He then joked that the silver statue would go missing during the night as he celebrated.
