Jackson now lord of the skies

17 Sep, 2008 01:00 AM
The skies over France in World War I may seem a long way from Rivendell, Helm's Deep and the Shire of J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings but, strange as it may seem, they just drew a little closer.

The link?

Director Peter Jackson, who brought Tolkien's sextet of books to life on the big screen.

Jackson has agreed to produce the audio-visual display for the Australian War Memorial's forthcoming exhibition, Over the Front: the Great War in the Air.

Filming for the audio-visual display, which forms an integral part of the memorial's exhibition of lovingly restored World War I aircraft, took place in Masterton, New Zealand, at the weekend.

The triple-Oscar-winning director donated his time to the project, with the memorial paying for the display.

Jackson is an avowed fan of aircraft from the era.

He is chairman of the 14-18 Aviation Heritage Trust, which has a collection of aircraft from the period.

The memorial's assistant director of public programs, Helen Withnell, said Jackson's contribution would be a vital element of the exhibition space.

''[It] will be used to help visitors experience the risks, action and drama of First World War aerial battles,'' Ms Withnell said.

The exhibition will feature five World War I-era planes, as well as the 21m by 3.5m screen that will display the 10-minute sound-and-light show.

The show will be screened hourly. It will also feature replica aircraft in flight and use of computer effects created by the award-winning Weta Digital, co-founded by Jackson and instrumental in the effects used in Lord of the Rings.

Ms Withnell said the effects would be as ''realistic as modern cinema techniques allow''.

The show is scheduled to open on November 28.
