In the latest of a string of courtroom incidents in the ACT, a man seeking bail has tried to attack a Supreme Court judge during a court hearing.
Rhys Liam Brown, who will be sentenced next week for threatening to kill another man with a machete at Woden Plaza, threw a water jug at Justice Richard Refshauge.
The jug narrowly missed Justice Refshauge and his associate, hitting the wall of the courtroom.
Brown was sitting at the bar table, about 5m from the judge and became agitated during the bail hearing. He screamed before throwing the pitcher.
Justice Refshauge had given Brown permission to sit at the bar to represent himself in the hearing.
Moments before the incident, the 19-year-old told Justice Refshauge he had resumed drug use while in prison and also expressed concern at being exposed to criminal elements in custody.
About five Corrective Services officers restrained Brown. A trolley for carrying documents was damaged but no one was injured during the incident. Brown was refused bail.
While presiding over a case later in the day, Justice Refshauge said, ‘‘I’m obviously a bit shaken’’.
