Killer Carl Williams bids lonely farewell to mum

02 Dec, 2008 11:19 AM
Underworld killer Carl Williams will bid a private farewell to his mother today from his cell at Barwon Prison after being refused permission to attend her funeral.

- Williams remains in jail

- Barbara William's funeral today

- Estranged husband to attend

The self-confessed mummy's boy had applied for leave to attend the funeral of the woman he described as his best friend and "the best mum I could have wished for".

Corrections Victoria denied his request last week, citing security and public safety as key factors in the decision.

Barbara Williams took her own life just over a week ago at her Essendon home.

Police said her death was not suspicious.

Mrs Williams is said to have suffered depression after Carl was jailed for 35 years over three gangland murders.

Her estranged husband, George Williams, 61, is also serving time for drugs convictions.

He has been granted release from prison for the funeral service at St Therese's Catholic Church in Essendon.
