Lake still on list for Molonglo project

A lake could still be built on the Molonglo River in the new Molonglo housing development as a proposal for a smaller pond was now being assessed by planning authorities. A development application for a pond covering 15ha near the yet-to-be created suburb of North Weston is being considered by the ACT Planning and Land Authority as part of the Molonglo development, which also encompasses the other planned suburbs of Coombs and Wright.

ACTPLA confirmed yesterday it had not abandoned a separate proposal for a much larger lake – despite indicating two months ago it had done just that. A spokesman said yesterday that ‘‘a lake on the Molonglo River is one of the options for stormwater management in the Molonglo Valley’’.

‘‘Further investigations, including a triple bottom line analysis, will be undertaken over the next 12 months or so,’’ he said. ‘‘Results will inform the ACT Government’s decision on the most appropriate stormwater management option.
