Lakeside city land soon up for grabs

Lakeside city land soon up for grabs

08 Sep, 2009 07:48 AM
A prime piece of real estate on Constitution Avenue in the heart of Canberra could be released for mixed-use development, including residences and shops, as early as this financial year.

Industry experts tip a price tag of more than $20million for the ACT-owned land, now a dirt car park on the corner of Constitution Avenue and Coranderrk Street opposite the Canberra Institute of Technology's Reid campus, though the land is technically in Parkes.

Height limits of about 25m apply on Constitution Avenue, meaning a possible development of six to eight storeys, creating an opportunity for residences with million-dollar views across Lake Burley Griffin to the Parliamentary Triangle.

Some hope the development will resurrect the National Capital Authority's plan to turn Constitution Avenue into a ''grand boulevard lined with shops, cafes and a mix of commercial, entertainment and residential uses''.

The Rudd Government nixed those plans for Constitution Avenue by cancelling the $46million pledged by the Howard government to widen and enhance the thoroughfare.

A spokesman for Chief Minister Jon Stanhope confirmed yesterday the Government would release the land Section 3 Block 6 in Parkes possibly within the next nine months.

Its taken about 5 years (for whatever reason) but better late then never i guess.... Now its time to put on the market the rest of the prime real estate that withers away as above ground parking all over the city..... Though quickly brushed over in this article: but does this mean that the local government has the desire to be forward thinking and committ to forking out money to widen Constitution Avenue as proposed by the previous federal government? Lets hope so for a good development/planning/environmental outcome for all.

do early as possible more land more residental property close to civic need to be released.the rental/buying value in canberra is inflated to the max.so it will be niece if govt start releasing more land for a residental development around civic. Lonsdale st. development should go ahead as well.

Should involve a balanced mix of high density efficient appartment buildings with shops at ground level and a substantial amount of open and preferably green space ... think European levels of avenue design. Not the soulless concrete jungle with walls of badly designed towers that have taken over West Civic.

Canberra is a dead city. There should have been more apartment and hihg rise building around the city to bring more activity. Otherwise it will remain ghost city forever.
