Lightning strike send tree tumbling in Scullin

24 Feb, 2009 01:00 AM
A driver had a narrow escape from a lightning strike in Scullin yesterday.

The 40-year-old man was was left shaken but uninjured after lightning blasted a tree across the road in front of his car.

He was on Wirraway Crescent about 3pm when the bolt struck.

It is understood the driver felt a slight electric shock after the tree fell to the road.

He was taken to Calvary Hospital for observation but was discharged about an hour later.

A Wirraway Crescent resident said she heard a loud clap at the time but thought little of it.

When she went out 15 minutes later she noticed the tree strewn across the road.

The ACT Fire Brigade removed the tree from the road.

The rogue lightning bolt was part of a brief storm which hit the capital yesterday afternoon.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe thunderstorm warning, but the weather brought very little rain.

An average of just 1mm of rain fell on the city in three hours.

The ACT Emergency Services Agency received no other reports of weather damage to property.

The unsettled weather is expected to clear tomorrow.

However, it is expected to return later in the week as another trough moves across the region.
