Little uproar over destruction of Qbn trees

17 Nov, 2009 09:23 AM
WHILE the culling of supposedly healthy trees has caused uproar within the Canberra community, the same can not be said for the steadily-decreasing trees lining Norse Road, the alternate entryway into Queanbeyan.

Last week The Chronicle was contacted by a concerned Queanbeyan resident who was wondering why the trees were being chopped down.

A spokesman from Territory and Municipal Services confirmed that while the workers were from the same company used for their tree removal program, this was not part of an ACT Government project.

A spokesman from Woden Contractors said that the land was part of a new industrial suburb.

''As part of the industrial sub division that's being built by Canberra Investment Corporation, called Beard, there's some fairly high voltage power that runs through the old abattoir,'' he said.

He said the power lines had to be relocated for the industrial subdivision and because of their high voltage needed a clearance of about 20 to 30 metres.

He confirmed this was the reason the trees had all been chopped down.
