Man thought 7yo girl was prostitute, court told

05 Nov, 2009 07:18 AM
A man accused of sexually assaulting a seven-year-old girl was under the delusion that the child believed herself to be a prostitute, a Canberra court has heard.

Edmund Thomas Leong, 42, is alleged to have taken off the girl's pants and rubbed his penis against her stomach on June 14, 2008.

Yesterday, the ACT Supreme Court heard that Leong saw the girl playing with friends near his Red Hill town house and invited her inside.

He allegedly pulled down her jeans and underpants, took off his own trousers and asked the child to touch his genitals.

The court heard the girl refused and told him such an act was ''disgusting''. Leong then allegedly rubbed his penis on her stomach.

The court heard the man gave the girl a toy kangaroo, a pair of men's shoes and a clock to take home. Two days later, the girl's mother contacted police and Leong was arrested.

A report by forensic psychiatrist Stephen Allnutt was tendered to the court, stating Leong first saw the girl playing in his neighbourhood three years before.

Leong told Dr Allnutt that on the day of the alleged incident, the child did not refuse his advances.

''He said he believed that she thought that she was working as a prostitute,'' Dr Allnutt wrote.

''He denied thinking himself that she was a prostitute.''

According to the report, Leong said he felt an uncontrollable urge to rape the girl, which he defined as removing her clothes.

The document also stated that Leong described hearing voices in his head after eating Chinese food, had never had a close relationship and had bought a blow-up doll to satisfy his sexual urges.

The court heard he was currently being treated by ACT Mental Health but was not undergoing therapy or taking medication at the time of the alleged incident.

Leong's defence lawyer said he felt his client was in poor mental health but, according to medical advice, was still fit to plead. Justice Hilary Penfold ordered Leong undergo a mental health assessment.

The matter continues next month.
