Market makeover: moves to demolish bus depot

17 Aug, 2009 09:25 AM
The ACT Land Development Agency proposes to demolish the old bus depot buildings in Kingston and construct a new home for the popular Sunday markets in the same precinct, but closer to Lake Burley Griffin.

The prime real estate on Wentworth Avenue where the buildings now stand would then be sold.

Chief Minister Jon Stanhope stressed the proposal had yet to be approved by the agency's board or the Government.

However, he highlighted the value of the land on which the old bus depot stood. ''The existing buildings housing the markets have not been listed by the Heritage Council and are not in keeping with the high-quality of development elsewhere at Kingston Foreshore,'' he said.

''This valuable site represents excellent redevelopment potential and proceeds from the sale of the site fronting Wentworth Avenue will fund the construction of the new building [for the markets].''

Mr Stanhope guarantees the award-winning Old Bus Depot Markets will remain in the Kingston precinct whatever the decision.

If a new building is approved, the markets will be run from an undercover car park for 12 months until the construction finishes. The ACT Heritage Council has decided the 1940s buildings, which were once used to service Canberra's buses, lack the historical or architectural value to warrant listing on the Heritage Register.

No doubting the value of the site financially. If we have to keep part of the montrosity of Cameron Offices which were not built until the 70s, why should we not keep the icon of transport in Canberra which to those of us many born and bred Canberrans represents a much earlier past.

Pro-development money-grabbing. Typical Stanhope.

The sale of the old bus depot should be conditioned on the completion of a new market building, otherwise who knows what the politicians might do after the existing market build is sold.

Having worked in those workshops at one stage for more that 20 years I feel a bit like when the Royal Canberra Hospital was proposed for demolition. It is sort of like what is decided as historical or of architectural value is back the front, a good example of misguided preservation being the proposed heritage listed Northbourne Flats? When the upper part of the workshop building was constructed in the early 1930's it said because of its unique design with the steel girders to be largest of its type in the southern hemisphere. There is not any other industrial building of that era apart from the Yarralumla Brick Works left in the ACT, so why destroy a unique bit of industrial heritage for future generations?

Old Bus Depot Markets - 3 key words here "Old" and "Bus" and "Depot". Now, here's a word "atmosphere" yes kids, it's the nature of the place that gives it appeal and is key to its enduring success. The old industrial feel, the tea bags hanging from inside the ceiling (never seen them? Look up), the setting amongst other heritage buildings - it's a cultural precinct with icons of the past lent new life through creative concepts something the bureacrats just don't understand and that developers are trying to influence. This asset belongs to us and we should keep it.
