HUNDREDS of enthusiasts took advantage of the perfect spring weather to enjoy Bike Fest at the Sutton Road Driver Training Centre yesterday.
Closing motorcycle awareness week, the festival treated the small but appreciative crowd to motorcycle stunts and some gravity-defying moves from 17-year-old Sam Rummery.
Sam, who lives in Conder, is setting his sights on Europe after winning in the youth category at the Xispa 2009 Australian Moto Trials Championships. ''That's where all the real competitions are,'' he said.
In moto trials, riders are pitted against rough terrain that can include boulders, streams, hill climbs, logs and drop-offs.
''You've got to be fit. The bike's almost 70kg, and in trials it's not like you're just riding along you're sort of manhandling the bike everywhere,'' Sam said.
Bike Fest featured trade stalls, displays, free lessons, music and food.
Peter Major, one of the festival organisers and the media officer for the Motorcycle Riders Association ACT, said in contrast with last year's inaugural event this year's was ''riders for riders''.
