National Museum of Australia director Craddock Morton has announced plans to retire from his position.
It is understood Mr Morton advised the chairman of the museum council last week he would not seek another term when his contract as director ended next June.
A museum spokesman confirmed that the position would be advertised in the near future, and that Mr Morton had indicated that he would step aside sooner if a replacement was found before June.
A spokesman for Arts Minister Peter Garrett confirmed he had been formally advised by the museum's chairman, Daniel Gilbert, of Mr Morton's decision. MrMorton was in Sydney yesterday and unavailable for comment.
Mr Morton said in an email sent to staff last week he had enjoyed his six years as director, but the museum would benefit from fresh ideas and renewed energy.
