Oakeshott, Windsor to make a call at 3pm

07 Sep, 2010 11:38 AM
Rob Oakeshott and Tony Windsor are expected to reveal whether they will support a Labor or Coalition minority government during a press conference in Canberra at 3pm today.

Bob Katter has announced he will back the Coalition.

The independent powerbrokers yesterday hammered out a deal to bring in historic parliamentary reforms.

The trio garnered bipartisan support to overhaul question time, bolster the independence of the Speaker, establish a parliamentary budget office and strengthen the committee system.

A crossbencher or Opposition member would chair one of the most powerful committees responsible for public accounts and audits under the reforms.

The Independents had one outstanding issue last night, calling on incoming Nationals MP Tony Crook to guarantee he would not block supply or support a no confidence motion against a Coalition government.

Mr Crook suggested he would act like an Independent who had ''switched a light on in a few people's heads'', Independent Rob Oakeshott said yesterday. ''We cannot form a government even if we wanted to with Mr Abbott ... [if] we don't get a resolution to that so that we can make a judgment call that the nation is waiting for.''

The three independents are in this position after Australians failed to deliver a clear result in the election more than two weeks ago.

Ms Gillard can count on 74 votes - two shy of a majority in the House of Representatives after incoming Greens MP Adam Bandt and Independent Andrew Wilkie sided with Labor.

Mr Abbott can only muster 73 votes if the incoming Western Australian MP Mr Crook supports the Coalition.

Last night, Mr Crook pledged to support the Coalition to form a minority government but vowed to sit on the cross benches until the party committed to boosting funding for mining regions.

Check back after 3pm for live coverage of the independents' announcement.

Dear editor, Some many years ago, way back in the early 1970s, a Christian pastor by the name of Jack Burrell wrote a book called WHAT WILL BECOME OF AUSTRALIA (on the net) in which he documents a vision and Words of Knowledge from The Lord about a time when people will lose faith in governments because those governments have become inept. Looking at the present federal parliament situation(s) in Canberra I would say his prophecies were spot on. He also spoke about a time when there would be an invader moving down from the north. Looking at Australias woeful defence preparations I dont think we will be ready for that either. What a country:(

I can't wait to see the reforms in place. Well done guys. We need more independents in parliament.

if the coalition is elected people of australia will find out the real debt that labor has put us in otherwise it will be hidden until labor is beaten,i shudder at what amount the debt is going to be and i think many australians will shudder with disbelief when the figure is known

Now I am at the point where i cannot handle anymore of the 'three that will decide the government' rubbish. They are going to decide who they will back - not who will govern. If I never see Oakeshott's face again, it will be too soon. Katter has proven himself to be what everybody is calling him - and that has taken some proof!! Windsor seems to be trying to take the whole thing seriously (?) - until you get him running straight to a TV interview to espouse the comments initiated by the Treasury !!! It honestly makes you wonder, as one of the people ACTUALLY responsible for electing the incoming government - was it worth all this charade??? I am absolutely confident that these three guys will never find themselves in this situation again, and - after this next term of government - will be amazed ever to see them in parliament again!! People (particularly their constituents) have long memories. Enjoy your party while you can - you have still to face the 'music' when you get back home.

Ths capaign has been charaterised by unsupported statements of the kind you have just made, particularly the Liberal side. Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt propaganda instead of reasoned comment. Who says the debt is bas? It is a fraction of that other countries have, and it arose only from the stimulus that saved suf from the GFC. Australia does have a debt problem - it is private debt, household and business debt that is exponentially increasing while goivernmnet debt falls. Your comment implies we should continue with that trend, based on the proposition all goverment spend is bad all private is good. Read up on the GFC and you will find that is fatally flawed. Bring on government by negotiated concensus moderated by the minority members I say. It cannot be any worse than the agressive born-to-rule two party politcs we have come to see from both sides.

@G.Gibson, 7/09/2010 10:26:13 AM - Wouldn't it be Jack Burrito by any chance? Please spare us the 'Words of Knowledge' of yet another self-appointed Christian prophet. And don't forget to look under your bed tonight as you say your prayers. You never know how many communists may be hiding there. @Eggles- Honestly, should be Engels! Can't wait to see Rabbott's cranky face... Frothing at the mouth, wrathful eyes because the 'Born to rule' miss out for at least another three years... Enjoy democracy, that's what it's called.

Which way will the independents swing? It was interesting watching Tony Windsor's reactions on screen (T.V. and Net) yesterday. He was able to look, with a smile, at Rob Oakeshott from time to time and Chris Pyne but he did not look at Anthony Albanese at all. Was it approval for the Liberals (given his seeming warmth directed at Chris Pyne)? Or was he trying to trying to hide all clues of his intentions of supporting Labour (and thus being ultra conservative in his actions regarding Anthony Albanese)? TIme will tell. Pity body language doesn't always speak clearly!

These Independents are the best thing for Australia. The disenchantment that people feel with Labour and Liberal is like supporting a team where you know that all the players have tickets on themselves but they fail to deliver much like England in the World cup. What we want to avoid is fielding a team like France that care nothing for the jersy that they wear and more for self interest and pride. Lets pray that our politicians can find some form, belief and character like the Socceroos have always shown Australia as they have put on the Aussie jersey.
