Parents back Henson over school scouting

06 Oct, 2008 03:23 PM
Parents of children at the primary school where photographer Bill Henson scouted the playground for models have supported the artist and the principal's decision to allow him into the school.

St Kilda Park Primary School council president David Myer said the school backed former principal Sue Knight who escorted Mr Henson around the school last year.

"The Education Department is doing an investigation," Mr Myer said.

"They will produce their findings sometime shortly. There's nothing much more to be said. Let's find out the facts of the investigation."

Mr Myer said he held an opinion about Mr Henson and whether he should have visited the school, but he would not reveal it before the investigation was completed.

"The school community is supportive of the past principal," he said.

"I am disappointed with the 'commentators'."

Mr Henson ignited national debate earlier this year when his nude photographs of a young girl were removed from a Sydney art gallery.

Six-time Olympic rower James Tomkins, whose daughter Jess is in Grade One at St Kilda Park Primary, said he supported the school's decision-making.

"I've got no problems whatsoever as long as the school knows what the situation is," Mr Tomkins told AAP.

"You rely and trust their judgment, their responsibility.

"You've got football scouts going to schools, you've got basketball scouts, dance scouts.

"The scouting I don't have a problem with, it's then what it's used for - that's another question.

"But having someone like a well-known artist go to a school, no problems whatsoever.

"You don't know what he's going to produce. All he's doing is looking for appropriate kids.

"I think if Jess was chosen then it's the whole question of are you going to agree or not?"

He said the school was popular for its diversity.

The children of his former Oarsome Foursome crewmates Nick Green and Drew Ginn also attend the school.

"There's all these artists, actors, designers, sports people, it's got an eclectic mix," Mr Tomkins said.

"This is another part of art. I'm not going to make a judgment one way or another on whether the pictures are right or wrong but how long have we been sculpting and painting beautiful pictures of infants to 90-year-olds?"

He said Ms Knight had been "fantastic" for the school.

"You talk to any of the parents at the school and I would be surprised if you heard a bad word against her," he said.

A mother of an eight-year-old boy at the school said she had no problem with Mr Henson being in the playground.

The mother, who gave her name only as Deborah, said she was critical of the furore that has blown up around Mr Henson's photographs of naked children.

"I think there are too many uptight parents," she said.

"I don't have in issue with Bill Henson, he's been proved to be innocent, his artwork is displayed everywhere, he's a revered and legitimate artist.

"It's not like he has not contacted anyone or was on the premises unsupervised, people have a choice."

Deborah said as long as protocols and policies were followed with the children, she "trusted the school to do the right thing".

"She (former principal Sue Knight) was revered as one of the great principals who was loved by most of the school community and would never do something not correct," she said.

I read with sadness the comments of support from the parents of children attending St Kilda School and of its Schools Council President Mr Myer for Mr Hensons visit for the purpose of finding suitable children to photograph naked I am trying to understand the mentality Mr Myer and the parents quoted is it the need to feel sophisticated after all Mr Henson is world famous or/and the desparate need for celebrity/fame /monitary gain which seems pervade Western culture. Celebrity and commercial gain seems to have replaced character for a lot of people Really why can't we respect children its all very disturbing Yours truly ########################
