Parton to stand as the 'voice of reason'

29/08/2008 12:13:00 PM
Former radio host Mark Parton will announce today he is standing as an Independent for the seat of Ginninderra with the financial backing of the Canberra Business Club.

Mr Parton, 41, said he wanted to be the ''voice of reason'' in the Assembly.

''What I'm really sick to death of is party politics in what is essentially a trumped-up city council,'' he said.

''There's just so much time and effort that is wasted on nitpicking and politicking and vote-scoring. Can you imagine how much more productive the halls of power in this city could be if all they were worried about was running this city?''

Mr Parton said he was sounded out by the Liberals, Labor and the Community Alliance Party to run for them but he wanted to contest the October 18 poll as an Independent.

''I genuinely believe there's going to be a cross bench which will have a major role in the governing of the territory, and I want to be free to genuinely represent my constituents,'' he said.

Mr Parton said he had the financial support of the Canberra Business Club, chaired by Jim Murphy who has previously helped bankroll Liberal campaigns. He understood the club was also supporting two Community Alliance Party candidates.

Mr Parton was a breakfast announcer on MIX 106.3 for a decade, resigning in June so that his wife, Vanessa, could take up an overseas posting.

He couldn't say yet whom he would support as chief minister should he be elected. ''I want to support the model of government that is the best for this town.''

He hoped his listeners would become his voters. ''They know I have similar feelings about a lot of issues as they do because I've been in their homes and their cars every morning for 10 years. They know I live next door to them.''

Mark Parton wasn't a very good radio announcer and I doubt he will be an effective local member. However, I'd like to know who the members of the Canberra Business Club are and why they are throwing big sums of money into these chosen candidates. What are they hoping to buy with this investment?

Fantastic! Parton is sure to lift the bar on things like sanctimony and righteousness in our trumped up city council. You go Mark! It is time to really give everyone in the ACT the benefit of your great moral compass.

Excellent, bring back the Independents but just the ones who have no particular axe to grind. The two major parties need a voice of reason. If we had it in this term their would probably be a dual lane GDE and a saving of 60 odd mil.

I agree with Pork and Gipps but not Nelly. Parton was a fine announcer with mature views on all subjects brought up during his session on air. I have witnessed his direct community involvement here in Tuggeranong a couple of years ago. I believe that he will pick up votes from both labor and liberal due to the retirement of Berry and Stefaniak as the ACT community is heartly sick to death of Stanhope and his cronies and possibly do not believe the liberals have much to offer at this time. Good luck Mark.

Go get them Mark. I just wish I was able to vote in your electorate. Maybe we should call you The New Democrat as you'll be doing your bit to keep these bastards honest.

I am right behind you Mark; you have my vote. With regards to Nelly, IMO you have no qualifications re radio announcing, maybe you should preface your words with "IMO".

Well Mike I think I read Pork's comment a little differently to you. I see it as a tongue in cheek comment and if that's what it is, he/she has hit the nail right on the head! What Mark Parton stands for is promoting his own self importance and over inflated ego. He couldn't give a damn about the community apart from using it as a platform to get himself some more publicity by pretending to support or care about a cause or issue. Voice of reason? What a joke! Try "Voice of Treason" or voice of teasin' even!

As a resident of Ginninderra I hope Mark will be an asset. My doubts arise when I see "wet" liberals bankrolling the campaign. I am tired of our major parties with major egos. Oh what the heck I woke up to him for years, good luck Mark
