Plan to increase organ donations

04 Aug, 2008 01:00 AM
Canberrans will receive organ donation information with their driver's licence renewals in an effort to boost donor registrations.

Minister for Health Katy Gallagher told the ABC yesterday that a member of the public had suggested the idea to her.

There are 47,000 registered organ donors in the territory and 1800 people Australia-wide are waiting for a transplant.

Community advocate Anne Cahill Lambert said the minister should be congratulated for the enterprise.

''It's really exciting that Canberrans will receive this information and hopefully talk to theirfamilies about their decision,'' she said.

The Lyneham resident said people who wanted to donate their organs had to be clear and discuss their wishes with their families.

''They will be the ones left on that horrible day that you die.''

Ms Cahill Lambert is waiting for a lung transplant and said initiatives like this one might increase the number of registered organ donors.

With a population of 300,000, the ACT should be aiming for ''at least 150,000 registered organ donors''.

The community advocate has been waiting about four years for a lung transplant an experience she describes as ''awful''.

The former chief executive of Women's and Children's Hospitals Australasia relies on an oxygen tank to survive and is too ill to work.

She has fibrosing alveolitis, a life-threatening disease that damages the lungs and causes shortness of breath.

Sufferers are usually treated with steroids and immunosuppressants, but a lung transplant is the only option for those who fail to respond to drugs.

In Australia, about 1 per cent of deaths occur in such a way that organ harvesting is possible.

Some 20 per cent of those waiting for heart, lung, kidney or liver transplants will die before they receive them.

Organ donation information will be sent out with licence renewals from the middle of this month.
