Plan to scrap roo research program

17 Oct, 2008 01:00 AM
The Liberal Party will scrap the ACT's kangaroo management program, but says that by employing more rangers it will keep culls at the status quo.

The Opposition scrapped the $30,000 ACT kangaroo action plan as part of its budget savings announced on Wednesday. But the party committed yesterday to hiring three more rangers who would, among their duties, take over the management of kangaroo numbers.

Liberal environment spokeswoman Vicki Dunne said the new plan would not see any drastic changes to the service; it would just redirect the money from research into land management that would include management of feral animals and kangaroos.

''It's actually a kangaroo management plan which is a whole range of things, including finally shooting kangaroos, and we shoot kangaroos every year in the ACT,'' Mrs Dunne said.

The party also announced plans to provide water audits and ''tune-ups'' for up to 9000 homes.

Opposition Leader Zed Seselja said the party now supported the Government's plans to extend the Cotter dam, but had not ruled out the idea of building the Tennant dam if it was required in the future.

The Opposition is also proposing a $5million boost in funding to reduce water consumption and to capture non-potable water.

A further commitment is offering a $250 rebate for washing machines to eligible households. Mr Seselja would not commit to a guarantee that water restrictions would ease as a result of the measures.

But Mrs Dunne said savings reaped from the initiatives would be used to allow households to use more water in their gardens. Mr Seselja pledged to establish 25 new community fire units. But they won't be active until next summer at the earliest.

The commitment will see each fire unit receive $25,000 for all equipment, receiving just over $4000 operational funding in the first year.

The Liberals have also promised to restore the role of an independent emergency services authority, with a commissioner reporting directly to the minister.
