Police hope a fatality-free Easter can help reverse what they say is a bad reputation ACT drivers have interstate.
The message came as police and emergency services pleaded with Canberra drivers to stay safe on the roads at Easter.
ACT Policing Traffic Operations acting Superintendent Daryl Neit said ACT drivers' complacency was behind the negative perceptions.
''Sadly, ACT drivers have a poor reputation interstate, for some reason we get interstate and other police agencies think we're not hotshot drivers,'' Superintendent Neit said.
Superintendent Neit said drivers needed to be more cautious when they drove on unfamiliar roads.
''I don't think they're reckless. I think we come from a city which has a fantastic road system and we become very complacent,'' he said.
NSW Police Inspector Marnie Nicholson said that too often, Canberra drivers were finding themselves in trouble when they went on holidays.
''ACT drivers do seem to figure higher in our statistics than other drivers,'' Inspector Nicholson said.
And police said drivers who flouted the law on their holidays could expect to be caught.
