Police attack ACT driver 'complacency'

09 Apr, 2009 08:05 AM
Police hope a fatality-free Easter can help reverse what they say is a bad reputation ACT drivers have interstate.

The message came as police and emergency services pleaded with Canberra drivers to stay safe on the roads at Easter.

ACT Policing Traffic Operations acting Superintendent Daryl Neit said ACT drivers' complacency was behind the negative perceptions.

''Sadly, ACT drivers have a poor reputation interstate, for some reason we get interstate and other police agencies think we're not hotshot drivers,'' Superintendent Neit said.

Superintendent Neit said drivers needed to be more cautious when they drove on unfamiliar roads.

''I don't think they're reckless. I think we come from a city which has a fantastic road system and we become very complacent,'' he said.

NSW Police Inspector Marnie Nicholson said that too often, Canberra drivers were finding themselves in trouble when they went on holidays.

''ACT drivers do seem to figure higher in our statistics than other drivers,'' Inspector Nicholson said.

And police said drivers who flouted the law on their holidays could expect to be caught.

Maybe it would be a good idea for ACT drivers to learn that there are at least two lanes on the highway. You don't have to sit in the right hand land the whole trip to Sydney...especially when you are not even doing the speed limit or overtaking. The number of times I get stuck behind ACT numberplates in the right hand lane, oblivious to anybody else on the road is scary.

ACT Policing would do well undertaking a high visibility compliance program, targeting drivers who speed, fail to keep left, use a mobile while driving, etc. Spend five minutes at any major intersection during peak hour, and you'll quickly see what I mean!

ACT drivers are the worst highway drivers. They've finally managed to take the "crown" from Victorians. Complacency is not the problem, outright selfishness is. The selfishness and self-centredness that is displayed in their driving here in Canberra is continued when they leave. I feel embarrassed to have ACT plates on my car, when traveling interstate, purely due to the behaviour of other Canberrans. What is more dismaying is, I've seen these attitudes getting markedly worse over the last 5-8 years. There still are some courteous drivers around, who should be acknowledged, unfortunately their numbers seem to be diminishing. How can these attitudes be changed, any ideas?

I think the bigger problem with ACT drivers in the right hand lane is the belief that, if you tail-gate really close, people will scurry out of your way. A lot of roads in the ACT look like freeways, but most of them are not. There is no obligation for people to crowd into the left hand lane just so a few people can exceed the speed limit. So, frankly, if I'm doing the speed limit you can go around.

I've been driving for nearly 50 years. Canberra drivers are among the worst in the world. Faults include impatience, anxiety, arrogance, contempt, speed and no understanding of the most basic safety measures such as braking distances between cars (tailgating). Don't believe me? Drive along the Tuggeranong Expressway or Adelaide Avenue at peak hour. I would like to see a doubling of the budget for ACT Policing's Traffic Branch.

As a regular commuter between Sydney and Canberra I have nothing but praise for ACT drivers on the Hume Highway; the majority of these drivers abide by the speed limit and yes, DO stay in the left lane when not passing other vehicles. As for my NSW counterparts the only reason they are in the right lane is that they love to speed, especially my fellow counterparts from Sydney who think nothing of doing in excess of 140 kph and tailgating an ACT registered driver as some kind of ego trip to tell their mates back in Sydney of the antics they did for the day on the Hume Highway. Yes, Sydney is hell for ACT drivers (and anybody else who is not from Sydney) but the majority do understand this and prepare accordingly. Warning: beware of QLD drivers in Sydney!!!

Ohhh actvisitor...dont be so harsh..they are on the right hand lane because they have to turn right on to Military Road

Those five minutes spent at any major intersection is because you're stuck behind a Canberra driver who can't merge.

Thats the problems with Canberra drivers, they all have their own opinion of how they should drive and that's that.... If we ALL followed the rules we would be ok....

Everyone knows that when you get an ACT licence and number plate you don't have to use your indicators, the person behind 'Should" know were you're going. This applies to AFP, Emergency Services, taxis, granny's, stupid L & P platers, even the buses.
