Police claim win over alleged alpine drug ring

26 Aug, 2010 09:58 AM
Police believe a series of arrests and the seizure of illegal substances worth more than $40,000 has shattered a major drug network operating in the Snowy Mountains ski resorts.

More than 80 police swooped at 9.30am yesterday on seven different locations, seizing ecstasy, LSD pills, cocaine, speed, cannabis and weapons including nunchakus, knives and samurai swords.

The arrests of Jindabyne locals and seasonal ski workers was the result of a 13-month covert investigation codenamed Strike Force Riverbed which focused on drug use at Perisher and Thredbo ski resorts.

Thirteen people have been charged with a range of drug offences.

Four of the men were refused bail and will face Queanbeyan and Nowra local courts today charged with drug supply and possession offences.

For more on this story, including details of how the investigation unfolded as well as of those arrested, see the print edition of today's Canberra Times.
