Policing Kingston

30/09/2008 1:00:00 AM
A Kingston police station would provide a significant deterrent to violent crime and property damage in the inner south, cross-bench MLA Richard Mulcahy says.

Mr Mulcahy said there were too many reports of violent crimes, including murder, in Kingston. The closest police stations were at Woden and Civic.

''I accept that police cannot be everywhere at once but I do not believe that it is unreasonable to expect a permanent presence in our communities,'' he said yesterday.

''A police station in Kingston would be of enormous comfort to local residents.''

Police Minister Simon Corbell said closed-circuit television cameras would be installed in Kingston and Manuka by the middle of next year, giving police the ability to monitor the areas ''24 hours a day, seven days a week''.

Increased police numbers were also on the way, and the ACT would benefit from another 16 patrol cars.

''That's more sensible than a shopfront that would be largely empty most of the time because police will be out on the beat,'' Mr Corbell said.
