Proposed development 'too big for the street'

07 Nov, 2009 10:54 AM
A 21-unit townhouse development proposed for Wanniassa has been knocked back by the ACT Planning and Land Authority because it was too big for the suburban street.

It sounds a warning for other developers looking to achieve urban infill in established suburbs.

The authority refused the development application to demolish four existing single-storey houses in McWhae Circuit and build 21 two-storey townhouses in their place.

ACTPLA chief planning executive Neil Savery said yesterday the authority had yet to be notified whether developer John Liu would appeal against the decision in the ACT Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

Mr Savery said the proposed development represented ''a number of departures from the rules of the Territory Plan''.

It did not complement the existing streetscape or fit in with the future character of the area, resulting in a ''dominant built form''.
