Protect the planet from gays, Pope says

Protect the planet from gays, Pope says

24 Dec, 2008 07:00 AM
Saving humanity from homosexuality and transsexuality is as important as saving rainforests, Pope Benedict XVI says.

In his end-of-year address to the Curia, the governing body of the Catholic Church, the Pope said man needed protecting ''from the destruction of himself'' and that ''an ecology of the human being'' was needed. And the pontiff added that when the Church defended God's creation ''it does not only defend the earth, water and the air ... but [it] also protects man from his own destruction''.

''If tropical forests deserve our protection, humankind ... deserves it no less,'' he said.

He defended the Church's right to ''speak of human nature as man and woman, and ask that this order of creation be respected''. Gender theory, which explores sexual orientation and gender identity, could potentially lead to the ''self-destruction'' of the human race by blurring the lines between men and women.

The Pope's comments drew criticism from within church circles and outraged gay groups. A spokesman for the Australia Coalition for Equality, Rod Swift, described them as ''arrant nonsense''. ''It shows the level of desperation in the Catholic Church to try and get its message across, demonising same-sex couples and comparing us to a global man-made environmental disaster. Homosexuality hasn't destroyed humanity up until now and the rate of homosexuality is not increasing or decreasing.''

Catholic commentator and writer Paul Collins, a former priest, said the comments were ''quite out of character for such an intelligent man''. ''It's neither fair nor accurate. Climate change and the destruction of rainforests is something that impacts on everybody. It is the most important issue we are facing. To equate homosexuality with it seems to me to be silly,'' he said.

Dr Collins said the message might have been aimed at homosexual priests within the Vatican itself. ''If he was addressing his comments to them, well, there are better ways to do it.''

The Catholic Church teaches that homosexuality is not a sin, but that homosexual acts are. Auxiliary Archbishop for Canberra and Goulburn Pat Power said it was important that people understood the Pope's comments in the context of Catholic teaching which says homosexual people deserved ''respect, compassion and sensitivity''. ''Every sign of unjust discrimination should be avoided.''

The managing director of the Australian Christian Lobby, Jim Wallace, defended the Pope, saying he could ''understand where he is coming from''. ''Without putting other people down, we need to make sure the demands of strident minority groups don't challenge the health of the family in the same way that greed has challenged the health of the environment.'' with agencies

I don't really think there is much blurring of the distinction between male and female in humans. Of course if we were some species of bird or lizard or fish ...

I believe this has been a big media beat up.The ONLY way to know what the Pope REALLY said is to read the transcript of his talk . As someone else on this site has said just read the transcript .

Well said, Jen. Any objective analysis of human behaviour would show a "natural" blurring of the distinction between the male and female of the species. Live and let live, I say. I don't hear any gays condemning the heterosexual lifestyle. They are honest enough to say it doesn't appeal to them. They may have something to say about the imposed celibacy of Roman Catholic clerics and its unfortunate consequences for some priests and religious. But they're not alone in that.

In defence of the Pope he is only trying to elevate the concern that society should have for the lost 10% who suffer the curse of homosexuality. In the same context Christians need to extend equal compassion to those homosexuals suffering from AIDS. The Lord didn’t make homosexuals; they were formed by factors such as dysfunctional families or lack of adequate moral guidance while growing up. I think it’s great that the Pope has raised the issue of the morality of homosexuality and its destruction impact (equal to environmental destruction) has been brought back up into the public consciousness.

Chin, your use of the much discredited "homosexuals are 10% of the population" line is just one of the reasons that the homosexual lobby is seen as every bit as misleading and disingenuous as any of those business lobbies who ravage the earth for their own self centred agendas, and why the Pope's analogy is essentially right. According to the La Trobe University 'Sex in Australia' survey, which introduces itself as " This is an unprecedented Australian study of 19,307 Australian men and women ..i.. it is considered the largest and most significant study of its kind undertaken in Australia." the number of homosexuals in Australia by % of population is 1.2% . Jen, as to why the selfish pursuit of the homosexual agenda is a threat to family, you need look no further than the fact that we have already given a baby over in stranger adoption to two men in WA and have now legalised surrogacy for two men in Vic. This deprives those children of their natural, inalienable right to begin life with a mother and father, to experience the male and female love and role model that is essential to their development. All to satisfy the unnatural demands of a "strident minority" - again proving the Pope's analogy correct. My organisation has supported the removal of unfair discrimination, but of course the homosexual acticivists show no such reasonableness, or concern for when the rights of adults should subordinate themselves to the rights of children. "The managing director of the Australian Christian Lobby, Jim Wallace, ... 'we need to make sure the demands of strident minority groups don't challenge the health of the family ...' is he looking in a mirror? What is a 'Christian Lobby'? Jim WHO? Why does Chritianity neeed a lobby group if it is SO universally accepted? Jim thingumy is the bewilderd face of the ranting religious right clinging tenuously to the hypocritical practice of justifying bigotry and intolerance "in the name of God!" Here he is hopelessly searching for relevance for his toxic messages of intolerance and selfishness in a society which is clearly growing more tolerant and inclusive - despite the best efforts of his redundant medieval organisation, they have been left behind. Such 'experts' on eveybody else's lives might actually reverse the falling attendances at their churches and growing indifference to their venom if they practiced some of the tolerance, respect, understanding and inclusion they seem to forget is also mentioned in the books they are so fond of quoting when they try to justify their stance on criticism and exclusion of others - in the name of the whatever. Merry Christmas whatsaname, I pray you, the Pope and all the other anachronistic minority groups who take such pride in imposing their opinions on others, get the gift of tolerance, maturity and maybe even understanding.

Why do people like Jim Wallace (and the Pope) seem to feel that gay people want to ruin life as we know it for heterosexuals and families? Affording equal rights and respect to gay couples and individuals doesn't impinge the rights of everyone else. It simply makes life more fair and just for everyone.

Forget the sensationalised headline - read the transcript and see, as is so often the case, misrepresentation in order to get a bite!! Surely the media outlets could just let all people of all genders, race, creed and sexuality enjoy Christmas!

well said roberto! I'm not gay, but recognise that procreating to excess is having a much more harmful effect on the planet than homosexuality. Drawing similarities between 'homosexuals and family health' and 'greed and the destruction of the environment' is obtuse and downright ignorant.

And this from the head of a religious organisation that is rife with homosexuals and pedophiles. What a bloody hide this moron has. Society needs protection from his "apostles" and “agents of suffering and misery”.
