A week-long protest on the lawns in front of the Prime Minister's residence ended last night after members of the Australian Tamil community met with Government officials.
A hunger strike was called off after one man collapsed outside the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade building in Canberra before the discussion.
Theivigan Panchalingam said the group had ended the hunger strike after an ''assuring meeting''.
''We feel that the Australian Government is making efforts to stop the situation in Sri Lanka ... but we will continue to campaign.''
Mathivannan Sinnathurai had not eaten for six days and was protesting against human rights violations in Sri Lanka.
Mr Sinnathurai collapsed after taking part in a 3000-strong march demanding Australia take a greater role in efforts to end the violence in Sri Lanka.
The 27-year-old university student from Sydney was taken by ambulance to the Canberra Hospital in a serious condition suffering from exhaustion.
