ACT students are losing their national supremacy in literacy and numeracy, with figures showing them falling behind their Victorian and NSW classmates and achieving minimal improvement on last year's results.
According to new comparisons of results in the National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy, the ACT is consistently outranked by Victoria and NSW across Year 3 in reading, writing, spelling, grammar, punctuation and numeracy in terms of the percentage of students meeting minimum national benchmarks.
By Year 5, the ACT comes second to Victoria in reading, grammar and punctuation, third in writing and spelling and equal first with Victoria and NSW in numeracy.
By Year 7, the ACT comes first in reading, grammar and punctuation, third in writing, third in spelling, and second to Victoria in numeracy.
By Year 9, the ACT comes second to Victoria in readingand writing, second to NSW in spelling, first in grammar and punctuation and third to Victoria and NSW in numeracy.
