Push to boost literacy, numeracy skills

19 May, 2009 11:44 AM
Increasing the ACT's mean national literacy and numeracy scores by eight points and reducing the achievement gap for indigenous students is the focus of the Government's new five-year literacy and numeracy strategy.

ACT Education Minister Andrew Barr launched the initiative for public schools during Public Education Week yesterday.

The strategy details a plan to reduce the gap for indigenous students in reading, writing and numeracy by 25 per cent by 2013 and increase mean National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy scores for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 by eight points.

The gap between high-performing and lower-performing students would also be reduced. To achieve these outcomes the Government is turning much of the onus back on to schools. Principals will commit to the targets in the strategy and set their own improvement goals in their school plans.
