Rash of robberies hits territory

22 Nov, 2009 09:21 AM
POLICE are considering a sweeping operation targeting aggravated robbery after a dramatic jump in service station hold-ups this year.

ACT service stations have been the victims of at least 16 robberies or attempted robberies, up from four in both 2007 and 2008.

The rise has partly driven ACT Policing to review its intelligence in anticipation of a large-scale operation to crack down on aggravated robberies in general.

At least two men faced court in recent weeks after separate incidents.

The ACT Motor Trades Association says service station hold-ups are an ill-conceived crime, as police often swiftly identify and arrest a suspect.

ACT Policing's head of crime prevention, Superintendent Kate Buggy, said police were greatly concerned by the increase.

''Even if there is no direct assault on a person, it's still a violent offence because of the trauma it can cause,'' she said.
