Rudd outlines $1bn loan for Indonesia

10 Dec, 2008 02:07 PM
Australia will provide $1 billion to Indonesia as a stand-by loan to help tackle the global financial crisis if it's needed, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd says.

Rudd has held bilateral talks with his Indonesian counterpart Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in Bali, on the sidelines of a democracy forum the two men are co-charing.

Among the plethora of issues discussed was a facility for a stand-by loan if needed by Indonesia.

Indonesia is also seeking potential assistance from Japan, the European Union, the Asia Development Bank and the World Bank.

"The scope ... of our proposed participation is in the vicinity of $1 billion," Rudd told reporters in Bali.

"Australia will of course act as a friend and good neighbour of Indonesia as we have done in the past, a decade ago, providing a financial facility of around $1 billion in a different financial crisis.

"This is the sort of thing good friends and good neighbours should do to help one another in times of global financial crisis."

Indonesia's president thanked Australia for its support.

"The ... thanks is for the provision of a stand-by loan for Indonesia if needed in case, or if the financial situation in Indonesia requires it," Yudhoyono said.

Rudd also announced $A3 million towards a new Institute for Peace and Democracy in Bali, which is aimed at fostering democracy in the Asia Pacific.

The new institute works alongside the Bali Democracy Forum, and will organise workshops and research on democratic processes.

"Oh! and just in case you may need it ... here's a billion" and here's 3 million for educating you about democracy .. as you know, we are experts at it. See how 'our democracy works' in the weekend of October 11-12. We consult a decocratic debate, except on weekends!

This is good policy and should be applauded and not rubbished. I would however rubbish the pokies and plasma approach of the economic stimulus package. Giving handouts to the poorest economic managers in the community without an education process is poor policy.

Well, I hope Mr Rudd had a word with "our good friends" and SBY about the sham court case and trial of Schapelle Corby!! Remember her?? She was the one that was charged, convicted and sentenced to 20 years gaol for "allegedly" smuggling drugs into Bali.... but wasn't allowed access to test the incriminating evidence to prove her innocence!! And Howard & co sat back like pack of frightened kittens and let it all happen!! So yes Kevin, we taxpayers will earmark a $1b loan facility to Indonesia...with favours in return thankyou...FREE SCHAPELLE CORBY!

Arn't Australian schools over croweded and people are having babies in the hospital toilets as we don't have enough beds. Palative care units are closing down due to lack of funding!! We need to spend billions on our water problems and Australia is also suffering from the economic crises. I do believe in helping the poor but will this money even reach them in Indonesia?? How about we fix up our own country first...

Australia gives money to Indonesia constantly.. Builds islamic schools for them, hospitals, pays for police, military and customs officers training. In Jakarta alone there are more people driving Mercedes Benz, BMW and Hummur's then there is in the whole of Australia. Shouldn't Indonesian's rich be paying more taxes to help their country instead of our hard earned tax dollars being sent oversea's.

It's nice of Australia to help a country in need. It would also be nice if the Indonesian justice system would give Australian's a chance to a fair trial if arrested in Indonesia. If Schapelle Corby was given one she would be back in Australia a free women.

State Governments run schools and hospitals - wouldn't it be nice if they actually did their job? What use are they if they don't??? Federal does foreign policy not schools
