Rudd's $632m medico-training plan

15 Mar, 2010 01:45 PM
The Rudd Government will invest $632 million to train a "record number'' of doctors as part of its plan to reform the health and hospital system.

To coincide with a visit to Queanbeyan Hospital today, Mr Rudd has announced the investment will eventually produce 5500 GPs and 680 medical specialists.

“These major investments will meet projected shortfalls, and help reduce pressure on hospitals by improving access and availability of GP and specialist services,'' Mr Rudd said.

“Today’s announcement will build on the Commonwealth’s commitment to permanently fund 60 per cent of teaching and research in our public hospital systems, as part of the new funding arrangements under the National Health and Hospital Network.''

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott said Mr Rudd was "all announcement'' and "no follow through''.
