A Macgregor man who was convicted earlier this year of possessing cartoon images of children being sexually abused has successfully appealed to have his sentence reduced.
William Paul Bellew was sentenced in the ACT Magistrates Court to a year of weekend detention after being convicted earlier this year of possessing 127 images.
He was also convicted of the Commonwealth Offence of using a carriage service to download child pornography.
Yesterday Justice John Nield reduced Bellew's sentence to six months in prison fully suspended.
Earlier this year, Bellew said it had not crossed his mind that the images were pornographic.
He told the court he used Adobe Photoshop to manipulate the characters to resemble characters from The Simpsons.
''It never crossed my mind that they were pornographic, because they were cartoons,'' the father of three said.
In the original sentencing in February, Magistrate Grant Lalor described the images as ''very, very graphic pictures of what can only be described as sadistic, grave sexual acts against very young children,'' he said.
The images were found on Bellew's computer in March last year.
The acting judge described the images as monstrous and said ''they should never see the light of day''. However he said a six-month suspended sentence was a significant penalty for someone of otherwise good character.
Bellew was released on a 12-month good behaviour order.
