Ski resorts chilly but cheerful as snow blankets the slopes

13 Jul, 2008 11:04 AM
WINTER has well and truly arrived with alpine resorts recording bumper falls and the mercury remaining well into the minuses.

Over the last seven days both Perisher Blue and Thredbo resorts have recorded well in excess of 60cm of snow with another good dump expected tomorrow.

Closer to home the Brindabellas have also enjoyed a good dusting with many Canberrans making the sometimes icy short road journey to see the white stuff.

Perisher Blue spokeswoman Christie Dowling said the snow depth was 73.3cm with 44 lifts open.

''It is brilliant with nice, dry, fresh powder across all the slopes,'' she said.

''We have had 71cm of snow fall in the last seven days, 15cm in the last 24 hours and another 5cm last night,'' she said.

''And it is expected to snow again on Monday.''

She said the whole region had ''a great atmosphere'' with hundreds of children making the most of their school holidays learning how to master the slopes.

Thredbo spokeswoman Fiona Gwyther said they had recorded 60cm of snow fall over the last week with 25cm falling on Friday night.

Eleven lifts were open with more expected over the next few days.

''The school holiday makers are loving the good conditions, they came at the right time,'' she said.

There was a large Canberra and Sydney contingent on the slopes.

Businesses in the alpine region has also been run off their feet with the good falls seeing thousands flock to the area.

Black Bear Inn, Thredbo, manager Alan Satchell said despite the quiet start to the season they were now ''very busy''.

''It is a lot better now than June.''
