Stabbing near college shocks onlookers

10 Mar, 2010 11:48 AM
A teenager was left bleeding in the arms of his mother after a stabbing in front of a southside college yesterday afternoon, in view of a crowd of witnesses.

Police say the 18-year-old man was stabbed a number of times when a fight broke out in a car park next to the Erindale College in Wanniassa yesterday.

Two males, believed not to be Erindale students, were taken to Tuggeranong police station to help police with their inquiries yesterday afternoon, as the victim remained in a serious but stable condition in Canberra Hospital.

His injuries are believed not to be life threatening.

Sergeant Rod Anderson said the victim was not enrolled at the college, but was believed to be related to a student.

''There were a few people involved [in the altercation], we understand that there were possibly two vehicles that left the scene shortly afterwards,'' he said.

The fight broke out about 1pm.

A witness said she and her friends had been given an early mark and were near the front entrance to the school when they spotted the victim, bleeding through his shirt, being held by an older woman.

The witness, who did not wish to be identified, said the woman shouted, ''help me, help me, my boy's been stabbed''.

Police confirmed the victim's mother was in the area at the time of the incident.

The unidentified student called for people from the nearby recreational facilities, who administered initial first aid.

She said she saw what appeared to be a wound to the stomach.

Other witnesses said they saw the victim walking assisted, holding his back, with blood trailing down his leg.

Sergeant Anderson said police arrived on the scene within minutes, responding to triple-0 calls.

Police and paramedics were at the scene as the student body left the building for lunch.

The sergeant said the crime scene was ''quite chaotic'' when police arrived.

''There were lost of people involved who may have witnessed what happened, and of course the person who was stabbed was injured, and he was our first priority,'' he said.

Police interviewed a number of witnesses, and were speaking to the victim at the Canberra Hospital yesterday, but were appealing for anyone with fresh information to come forward.

In particular, Sergeant Anderson said investigators were interested in speaking with anyone who might have filmed the fight.

''We're not sure at this stage [if footage exists], but certainly if it was captured on a mobile phone, we ask people to do the right thing and provide that to us so we can locate the people involved,'' he said.

He added that while images of the fight being uploaded to video-sharing site YouTube was not a big concern, it was a possibility.

''Again we do ask people to do the right thing, and assist us to locate the people who were involved.''

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
