Stuart Flats 'stabbing'

17 Apr, 2009 07:36 AM
One man was arrested and another hospitalised after an alleged stabbing at a public housing complex on Wednesday night.

A 42-year-old man was allegedly stabbed ''a number of times'' at Stuart Flats in Light Street, Griffith, after a fight broke out between two men, police said.

Police arrived at the scene shortly after 11pm, having received reports of an altercation.

The wounded man was in Canberra Hospital last night in a stable condition, but police said his injuries were serious.

A third man had his arm allegedly broken by a piece of wood.

He was also taken to Canberra hospital, but his condition was unknown last night.

Ambulance officers were called at 11.54pm, and took the two injured men to hospital half an hour later.

A 36-year-old man was arrested at the scene.

He was subsequently charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm over the stabbing.

He was also charged with recklessly inflicting grievous bodily harm for allegedly breaking the second man's arm.

The 36-year-old man will face ACT Magistrates Court today.

Police believe all three men were tenants of the complex, near the Manuka shops.

The longer Stuart Flats remains standing the worse the crime outcomes the neighbourhood have to suffer - the Police and locals know only too well. Stuart flats and Gowrie Ct nearby should be demolished as failed experiments to integrate.

So easy to blame government housing for the majority of the problems in that area. I have witnessed so much unruley behavior , especially around Manuka, not by housing tenants but more like teenagers from middle class Red Hill and Griffith. So easy to point the finger.
