Supermarkets, independents slog it out on discounted petrol prices

Moni Potter has a sentimental attachment to the Mobile in Mawson.

The 46-year-old woman has been filling up at the petrol station for some years, but said a promotion offered by Coles and Woolworths was enticing.

The giants are offering discounts up to 40c a litre until midnight.

The move has prompted the consumer watchdog to launch an investigation, and independent service stations fear they will be the victims of the price war.

It's a concern Ms Potter understands.

''My husband normally does the shopping ... he was looking at the promotions on the internet this morning,'' Ms Potter said.

She said if the dockets were there, she might use them.

''But I like keeping [the Mawson Mobile] in business,'' she said.
