Taste for handmade boosts markets

14 Nov, 2009 10:11 AM
The battle for the art and craft dollar is heating up in Canberra as markets become the cool place to shop in the national capital, with one market alone generating an estimated $700,000 annually.

The market scene is becoming crowded in Canberra, with both local and interstate operations setting up their stalls for some serious sales over the next six weeks.

The Melbourne-run Mathilda's Market selling handmade children's items will next year be held four times instead of just twice in Canberra, such is the demand.

The homegrown Handmade market, which attracts crowds of more than 10,000, is estimated to generate $175,000 each market for its stallholders, or $700,000 annually, with only four markets held per year.

And the institution that is the Old Bus Depot Markets is busier than ever, according to its owners, as it prepares to also open on Saturdays next month to cater to the Christmas rush.
