Five teenage Canberra girls – one just 13 years old - are accused of leading police on a high-speed chase in a stolen car early yesterday morning culminating in a police car being rammed.
The girls, aged 13, 14, 15, and 16, were arrested in Canberra’s south after allegedly leading officers on a chase through the southern suburbs in the car stolen hours earlier, at one point hurling a glass bottle at one of the pursuing police cars.
It is alleged that the chase was only brought to a halt when police cars surrounded the vehicle carrying the girls at Cooleman Court, Weston Creek.
Police say that that they were contacted by their Queanbeyan counterparts at about 1.45am and told that a White Nissan Pulsar, allegedly stolen in Watson earlier that night, was being pursued towards the capital.
According to investigators, Tuggeranong patrols officers picked up the chase shortly after and pursued the vehicle through Tuggeranong and Woden until it reached Cooleman Court.
Police charged three of the juveniles, aged 13, 14 and 16, with riding in a motor vehicle without consent and released them on police bail.
Police believe that the five were involved in the robbery of a woman’s handbag in East Row, Civic, this morning about 12.20am.
The 13-year-old, 14-year-old and 16-year old were charged with ride/drive motor vehicle without consent and were given watchhouse bail to appear in the ACT Children's Court at a later date.
The 15-year-old from Canberra’s south, who is alleged to have thrown the bottle at police, appeared in the Children’s Court charged with stealing the car, stealing a mobile phone and using an offensive weapon.
Her legal representative told Magistrate Karen Fryar that she had no instructions to apply for bail.
“Probably a wise choice,’’ Ms Fryar said.
