A teenager who raped a 40-year-old woman as she slept on a couch after a drunken New Year's Eve party has been sentenced to weekend jail.
The youth, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was 17 when he forced himself on the woman while her seven-year-old daughter slept beside her in the early hours of January 1, 2008.
In September of this year, a jury found the now 18-year-old guilty of sexual intercourse without consent.
The ACT Supreme Court trial heard from the victim, who said that after having a lot to drink at the house party in Page, her friends put her to sleep on a couch in the lounge room.
She said that when she woke up some time after midnight, she found the youth having sex with her.
The jury was told that when the woman raised the alarm, the boy was attacked by another male party-goer and had to be rescued by his father.
